It’s an issue that challenges the depth of my faith. It challenges me to speak up and be courageous. I want to do more, but to be honest, sometimes I feel that my efforts are in vain and have little impact in a world where this thing is so common. It is an issue with which many of us have become numb because it is easier to not think about it. To shut it out of our conscious thoughts and leave it to be battled among radical protesters, savvy politicians, and grave judges. I wonder if a sermon or Bible lesson will strike the chords of someone’s heart who is considering it. Perhaps the message would illuminate the simple wrong-headedness of such a thing. On the other hand, I wonder if a sermon or lesson is just a feeble attempt at trying to make sense of something that is absolutely senseless. It’s an issue that is more than a platform, ideology, or choice. It’s an issue about the sacredness of human beings.
Abortion. It’s a horrible word that emanates little of the pain and trauma associated with the millions of women and men who have walked through the dark valley. The word doesn’t denote or connote accurately enough the violence exacted on the more innocent victims in our “technologically-sophisticated culture.” To insulate our minds from the horror of what’s really going on we redefine a precious baby with some palatable substitute like fetus or tissue. To create logical barriers dividing us from the brutal reality of it, we practice mental gymnastics and redirect our focus on a woman’s right to choose, giving no thought whatsoever to the freedom of choice stripped away from a living baby. However we try to make sense of the senseless ness, abortion will never make sense in the postmodern expression of convenience. And our culture of convenience and self-absorption has fostered a society where killing an unborn baby is just the sensible thing to do because it is well…convenient. God help us.
Proverbs 29:10 says, “The bloodthirsty hate the blameless, but the upright seek his well-being.” Why are the unborn worthy of so much hate and bloodlust in the world? As followers of Jesus, we must “seek the well-being” of the unborn. We must offer the hope of healing to those women and men, who have been wounded and scarred by abortion. If God’ people don’t seek the well-being of the innocent, then who will?
