I have preached a lot of bad sermons with good titles. A good title does not guarantee a good sermon. I have also preached some goods sermons with bad titles! I keep a list of bad sermon titles I read or run across. Maybe you can identify with some of these.

“How not to become a road-kill church” based on Colossians 3:15-17, inspired by a favorite college biology text, A Field Guide To Flattened Fauna by Dr. Roger Knutson.

“Sawdust, Logs, Dogs and Hogs” from Matthew 7:1-7

A sermon on the Prodigal Son was entitled “How to Give a Pig’s Tail a Permanent Wave”

From the 1st chapter of Job: “What to do when you can’t eat a bite, can’t sleep at night and the woman you love won’t treat you right”

Isn’t it funny how we can often remember the title of a sermon but never the message? I guess that is human nature. God’s Word teaches us that the preaching and teaching of the good news of Jesus Christ brings life, hope, and healing. Isaiah 52:7 says, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” You don’t have to be a preacher to bear the good news of Jesus wherever you go. People with broken lives and hearts enter our paths every single day. These folks don’t need a bad sermon title. They need the good news of God’s love and grace.
