Forgiveness
(Matthew 18: 23-35)

- What does it really mean (from a practical sense)
- What’s going to happen if we choose to forgive (from a personal sense)
- What’s going to happen if we choose not to forgive (from a personal sense)

- Forgiveness is not reconciliation (two people make peace). It paves the way
but it is not the same
- Forgiveness is not restitution (pay back)
- Forgiveness is not restoration (to make it back as it was). Moses for example
was forgiven but he wasn’t allowed to enter the promised land)
- Forgiveness is not approval of the Sin. It’s not saying “what you did was ok.”
Sin is never ok and never good. It’s what put Jesus on the Cross.
- Sin is a willful decision to consider a person no longer indebted to you.

Forgiveness from a personal sense
1. Releases you from your debt
2. Brings you to a position of reliance on God (Hebrews 11:6). We can’t
have faith and an unforgiving spirit.
3. It will restore your usefulness
4. It relives you from your tormentors. (If you won’t forgive you become the victim)
5. Restores fellowship with the Father (Matthew 18:35)
